Singer demonstrates no facilitation of healthy breath management technique. Lack of proper breath management skill is reflected by poor singing posture and/or the inability to attain a suitable level of
diaphragmatic/inter-costal antagonism (i.e., support). Examples include the inability to sing required phrase lengths, insufficient support of the tone, and the overuse or underuse of the breathing mechanism.
Developing

Singer demonstrates a preliminary
understanding of proper posture and breath management; however, the application and integration of these concepts is noticeably inconsistent. For example, while the student may present proper expansion at the beginning of a phrase, he/she may collapse near the end of the phrase.
Proficient

Singer executes a healthy singing posture and the balanced, muscular coordination resulting in good breath management skills. Discrepancies, however, are sometimes evident—particularly when other aspects of the singer’s vocal technique are uniquely challenged (e.g., the final high note of a song.)
Exemplary

Singer skillfully synthesizes all aspects of breath management, demonstrating the balanced coordination of posture, breath flow, and breath support. Evidence of such coordination consists of proper posture; the steady, energized release of breath as heard in the singer’s ability to perform both short and long phrases regardless of other technical demands; and the consistent ease with which the singer accomplishes both inhalation and exhalation.
Phonation

(onsets - balanced, aspirate, glottal; intonation, vibrato, flexibility etc.)

Unacceptable

Singer is unable to produce balanced onsets. Faulty phonation is evidenced by the pervasive presence of hypo-phonation (breathiness), hyper-phonation (over singing), glottal attacks, faulty intonation, and/or inconsistent vibrato (tremolo, wobble.)
Developing

Singer demonstrates an emergent, though not yet consistent, ability to generate balanced phonation. The majority of onsets are balanced and intonation is relatively accurate. By and large, the singer produces a steady, healthy vibrato.
Proficient

Singer demonstrates healthy and balanced phonation; however, there is a noticeable decline in coordination when the singer is confronted with strenuous technical/musical demands (e.g. hyper or hypo-phonation in extremes of the tessitura.) Vocal agility, intonation, and vibrato may be similarly affected.
Exemplary

Singer consistently demonstrates healthy and balanced phonation, discernible by the presence of coordinated onsets; a clear vocal tone; vibrato that is unmanufactured, free, and steady; accurate intonation; and flexible, agile vocalism. Such synthesis occurs regardless of the technical demands of the literature performed.
Resonance

(chiaroscuro, impostazione, aggiustamento)

Unacceptable

Singer achieves only a minimal amount of resonance. The tone is often obstructed and unbalanced (bright-dark), lacks the presence of singer’s formant (“ring”), and is inconsistent throughout the singer’s full range. Lack of proper modification during registration events may result in abrupt laryngeal adjustments and undesirable changes in vocal color.
Developing

Singer shows progress towards the
consistent presence of a healthy,
unhindered, resonant vocal tone. A developing skill level, however, continues to be identified by overly bright and/or dark tones; the inconsistent presence of singer’s formant; and a novice ability to manage key registration shifts. (e.g., the singer may carry chest voice too high.)
Proficient

The singer regularly produces a tone whereby the voice is constructively
enhanced through resonance. A proficient skill level is evidenced by an unobstructed, resonant tone, that is balanced in color; the presence of singer’s formant; and the proper adjustments necessary for blending vocal registers; however, limitations and
inconsistencies are sometimes present when the singer is confronted with extreme technical/ musical demands.
Exemplary

Singer consistently produces a tone whereby the voice is constructively enhanced through resonance. Exemplary skill level is evidenced by an unobstructed, resonant tone, which is
balanced in color; the consistent presence of singer’s formant (“ring”); and the proper blending of vocal registers. Exemplary management of registration allows for adjustments in the passaggio when necessitated by the individual’s own vocal dimensions. Optimum resonance is maintained regardless of most technical/musical demands.
Articulation

(freedom of tongue, lips, and jaw)

Unacceptable

Singer consistently presents with extreme tension in tongue, lips, and/or jaw while in the act of singing. Such strain may be identified by rigid phonation, restricted resonance, and unhealthy breath
management.
Developing

Singer is capable of maintaining free articulators (lips, tongue, jaw), but the consistency of this independence is largely contingent on the successful execution of respiration, phonation, and resonation. As such, the developing singer’s articulation is often hindered by under-development in other technical areas.
Proficient

Singer regularly demonstrates freedom of the tongue, lips, and jaw while engaged in the act of singing; however, tension and constriction are sometimes revealed when the singer is confronted with extreme technical/ musical demands (e.g. tension in the jaw as a means of faulty support of high pitches.)
Exemplary

Singer consistently achieves optimal freedom of the tongue, lips, and jaw while engaged in the act of singing. Such autonomy is congruent with balanced phonation and is beneficial to resonance production.
Musical Expression

(dynamics, phrasing, interpretation)

Unacceptable

Singer does not articulate the artistic nuances notated in the music, such as dynamic markings, phrasing, and other diacritical markings. The singer does not apply artistic interpretation and musical imagination into the performance.
Developing

Singer demonstrates an emergent, though not yet consistent, attention to the
integration of artistic nuances notated in the music, such as dynamic markings, phrasing, and other diacritical markings. While the singer may intend an artistic interpretation, technical development often hinders its integration into performance.
Proficient

Singer regularly incorporates the artistic nuances notated in the music, including the performance of dynamics, the shaping of phrases, and attention to various diacritical markings. Musical Accuracy

(accurate performance of rhythms, pitches,etc.)

Unacceptable

Singer recurrently performs inaccurate rhythms, pitches, and/or diacritical markings with no evidence of melodic outline or dominant rhythmic structure. Such errors go beyond the simple misreading of the score and are largely attributed to poor cognitive processing of musical material or a lack of preparation.
Developing

While the singer grasps the overall melodic contour and rhythmic structure of the music, he/she does not perform these values precisely. Attention to proper diacritical markings may also be lacking.
Proficient

Singer performs the majority of notes, rhythms and other diacritical markings accurately; however, various errors are present.
Exemplary

Singer performs all notes, rhythms, and diacritical markings accurately.
Performance Style

(appropriate attention to style of the period/genre)

Unacceptable

Singer demonstrates no knowledge of the suitable application of stylistic elements specific to both the period and genre of the piece performed. An unacceptable
performance, for example, may lack attentiveness to appropriate
ornamentation.
Developing

Singer shows an awareness of period and genre-specific style, but has only minimally or incompletely incorporated these elements (ornamentation, tuning, straight tone, portamenti, etc.) into performance.
Proficient

Singer competently incorporates stylistic elements appropriate to both the period and genre of the piece performed; however, the performance of these elements lacks complete technical integration, especially when confronted with difficult
technical/musical demands.
Exemplary

Singer skillfully incorporates stylistic elements specific to both the period and genre of the piece performed. This includes, but is not limited to, the appropriate application of: ornamentation, tuning, straight-tone, vibrato, portamenti, etc.
Textual Comprehension

(communicates clear understanding of the words)

Unacceptable

Singer does not demonstrate an
understanding of the song text; e.g., performs the piece with the opposite expressive motivation intended by the words.
Developing

Singer reveals a cursory understanding of the song’s general meaning, but this awareness is not consistent throughout the piece.
Proficient

Singer clearly communicates the overall meaning of the song with attention to some, but not all of the linguistic nuances of the text.
Exemplary

Singer clearly communicates a word-by-word understanding of the song text, conveying a clear knowledge of the text’s meaning both linguistically and musically.
Diction

(accurate pronunciation of languages)

Unacceptable

Singer consistently mispronounces the text of the pieces performed. The singer presents little or no awareness of correct singer’s diction.
Developing

Singer demonstrates an emergent
understanding of the correct articulation and enunciation of the languages performed; however, some errors are present, especially when various phonemes are foreign to the singer’s native language. Underdeveloped technical facility may also obstruct proper phonetic production.
Proficient

Singer knowledgeably articulates and enunciates the appropriate diction for all pieces performed; however, when
confronted with difficult technical demands proper phonetic production is hindered.
Exemplary

Singer accurately articulates and enunciates the appropriate diction for all pieces performed. An exemplary performance of correct diction favors proper lyric diction for singing as opposed to standard spoken diction.
Ensemble Skills

(musical relationship with pianist)

Unacceptable

Singer does not collaborate effectively with the pianist. An unacceptable level lacks a cohesive musical relationship between the vocal line and the piano part. Such a performance is often rhythmically disjoined, evidenced by the irregularity and inconsistency of tempo between the two performers.
Developing

Singer shows progress towards a consistent awareness of the musical relationship between the vocal line and the piano part. Hallmarks of a performer’s developing ensemble skills include an emergent acuity towards harmonic coloration of the vocal line and a cohesive approach to rhythm. These skills, however, are inconsistent and may lack finesse; e.g. the mutual negotiation of rubato.
Proficient

Singer collaborates musically with the pianist, acknowledging the artistic
relationship between the vocal line and the piano part. Such a performance evidences a cohesiveness of rhythm and attention to the melodic and harmonic coloration and tuning of the vocal line, however, lacks
cohesiveness when confronted with difficult technical demands on the instrument.
Exemplary

Singer consistently collaborates musically with the pianist, acknowledging the artistic relationship between the vocal line and the piano part. Such a performance pays
obeisance to distinctive rhythmic interactions, melodic and harmonic coloration and tuning, and – when appropriate to the genre – an awareness of the interplay of various musical personae within the piece. Such expert artistic collaboration is present regardless of technical obstacles.
